Bucknell’s Bertrand Library has the largest collection of anime motion picture and television series DVDs in our region. We also have a growing collection of manga and graphic novels. These have been built with the help of the Bucknell Anime Club over the course of the past ten years; the club members suggest new titles, and they also use part of their budget to support these library acquisitions.
The anime collection supports club activities and viewing by individual members, and receives a high level of circulation from the Bucknell community in general. These DVDs also support faculty teaching, and have been used in courses for the East Asian Studies and English departments and the Film and Media Studies program.
Our collection was featured at a local event this month, Penn College in Williamsport hosted the Wildcat Comic Con on April 13 — 15th. There will be panel discussions on Friday aimed at faculty and librarians interested in including anime and manga in their coursework and their collections. Bucknell librarian Jim Van Fleet participated in a panel titled “Graphic Novel Collection Development for Academic Libraries.” There was also a panel titled “Boost Your Circulation with Manga and Anime Clubs,” featuring our unique collaboration with the Bucknell Anime Club.
