Selected works from Special Collections/University Archives extensive collection of limited editions by artist Claire Van Vliet’s Janus Press are exhibited on Lower Level I from now until December 7.
Since the 1990s, the Bertrand Library’s special collections has been collecting the works of the Janus Press which is now considered one of the most eminent, respected, and innovative fine presses in the United States. The Janus Press was established in California in 1955 by artist Claire Van Vliet who serves as proprietor of the press. Since 1966, the Janus Press has been located in Vermont, mainly publishes the works of contemporary writers while working collaboratively with other artists, paper makers, binders, and print makers to create hand made books, posters, and broadsides. The press’ publications range from the more traditional or simple book form to artist’s books where the book becomes an art form.
